Knowledge of Brazilian dentists and students in treating dentine hypersensitivity

Objective: To evaluate knowledge of undergraduates and qualified dentists from a Brazilian Dental School in treating Dentine Hypersensitivity (DH). Methodology: Data obtained 22-item questionnaire were analysed arranged distribution figures. Results: Of 100 respondents, 66.3% indicated that up to 25% their patients had DH; 41.7%, the duration discomfort was eight weeks; 78.4%, they examined patient with DH within last two-four 70.4%, this done after initiated conversation on DH. Most participants responded affects patients’ quality life, its aetiology attrition, exposed dentine, occlusal interference, gingival recession or abrasion. The most common ways diagnose sensitivity history analysis, clinical examination, testing probing; conflicting conditions fractured restoration, bleaching sensitivity, marginal leakage, chipped tooth periodontal disease. Furthermore, 82.5% 78.7% respondents confident diagnosing providing advice patients, but only 38.8% identified hydrodynamic theory as underlying mechanism. pain considered self-assessment, dental dietary analysis thermal assessment; recommendations, use desensitizing dentifrices, education toothbrushing, in-office application products, restorations. Conclusion: There is still confusion concerning aetiology, diagnosis subsequent management DH, both students need better education.
